Math 307: Fundamentals of Advanced Math; Spring 2025.




Instructor: Dr. Stefan Forcey Textbook: Required: "Mathematical Proofs: A Transition to Advanced Mathematics", by Chartrand, Polimeni, and Zhang (third edition).

Course Syllabus.
The syllabus will include information about grading policies, exam schedules and policies, etc. You should definitely read it.

  • Jan 13. Day one. (Jan 19: Last day to add.)
  • Jan. 20: No class on MLK day.
  • Chapter 1 : Sets
  • Chapter 2,3 : Logic and proofs
  • Jan. 26: Last day to drop.
  • TEST 1 Midterm.
  • Feb. 18: No class on Pres. day.
  • Chapter 4,5,6 : More Proofs.
  • Mar. 2: Last day to w/draw.
  • Chapter 7,8,12 : Even more proofs.
  • TEST 2 Midterm
  • Mar. 24-30: Spring break
  • Chapter 9,10,13 : Relations and Combinatorics.
  • May 2: Last day.
  • TEST 3: Comprehensive Final Exam

    Additional notes:
    1) The complement of the empty set is the whole set U ( universe).
    Complement of {} = U.
    2) Subtracting works even when there is no overlap: it is just the whole first set, since there is nothing to subtract.
    A - B = A, when A intersect B = {}.
    3) A - {} = A.
    4) A union {} = A.
    5) A intersect {} = {}
    6) {} - A = {}
